Hi, Mary and Tim,
I hope the New Year is good to you. Our Christmas was as happy as it could
get, under the circumstances. Mary Chapman and her mother came for dinner,
and Christmas Eve we had lots of friends over for open house.
Yesterday we received the box with Phil's burial things. The map will be
sent separately. ALthough the video was hard to watch, Andy, Philip and I
felt that it was a good ending for Phil's life. An officer from Bremerton
had called a couple of months ago and asked questions about Phil and
some of the information I gave him was used in the burial service.
The CO said something like: "He served many years in the navy, in two wars,
and one of his proudest moments was being in the Scottish American Military
Society's honor guard." The ship was the frigate, the USS Ford. Phil's
ashes were scattered November 19 at 2pm, while the ship was on patrol.
The CO's letter said, "The ship was stopped, the afternoon was warm with
slight winds and calm seas."
I think you already knew what SAMS meant to Phil, and it meant a lot to me
that out of all the things I had told the officer about Phil, the thing
about SAMS was given notice.
Love to both of you, and belated congratualtions to you, Tim.
